As we step back to finding our normal routines and rhythms of life, Providence Ghost Tours LLC will be stepping forward with regularly scheduled “Haunted Benefit Street” tours.
In the wake of the shooting at Brown University, we are going to support the college community by giving space to Brown University’s grounds (read more in my previous post here). That doesn’t mean we abandon ghosts all together- our name is Providence Ghost Tours LLC afterall!
Tours will shift to “Haunted Benefit Street” for the next few months. This is our newest haunted tour route and was previously only available in October when we needed more guides and more route options to accommodate by busiest month. Now, we are going to sink our teeth into this route and really savor these spirits!
Benefit Street is built on top of the second oldest street in the city. While it skips acrossm one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Providence, many folks don’t realize that this is one of the most haunted hillsides around- and with good reason!
Before it was one of the most sought after addresses in Rhode Island, this street was little more than a rutted footpath that wound its way amongst the dead. Yes, Benefit Street is built atop Providence’s original graveyard!
When the colonists established the little village of Providence, there was no primary, burial ground. People laid their loved ones to rest in back of their homes on the hill. These plots varied in size, but accommodated approximately 120 years worth of Providence’s dearly departed. To make way for Benefit Street, remains were exhumed and moved over the course of four years. They were laid to rest at the North Burial Ground.
To say that Benefit Street is the most haunted street in town is an understatement. From ghostly carriages to specters who slink under the streetlamps, there is so much to discover when darkness falls!
Join us during the dark months as we gain a deeper connection to and understanding of the longest-standing residents of Benefit Street.
